WHAT TO EXPECT IN A THERAPY SESSION

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — and it’s natural to wonder what actually happens in a session. My aim is to make the process as comfortable and transparent as possible so you know what to expect from the start.

Your first session is usually 80 minutes, giving us extra time to cover any necessary administrative requirements and to explore your situation in more depth. This includes discussing your background, current circumstances, and reasons for seeking support. It’s an opportunity for me to get a full picture of what’s brought you here, and for you to ask any questions about the therapy process.

Subsequent sessions run for 50 minutes and can take place either in person or via secure telehealth. These sessions are a blend of conversation, reflection, and practical strategies. We might:

  • Explore the situations, thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that are affecting your wellbeing

  • Identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck

  • Learn tools and techniques (drawn from evidence-based approaches like CBT, ACT, Schema Therapy, Mindfulness, and Interpersonal Therapy) that you can use between sessions

  • Review progress and adjust our focus as your needs evolve

Personally, the most important part of the therapeutic relationship is that it is collaborative — it’s not about being told what to do – nor do I profess to be some oracle of truth & infinite wisdom - but working together to understand your experiences and find ways to improve your quality of life.

You’ll always be encouraged to ask questions, share feedback, and guide the direction of your therapy.

Some sessions might feel challenging as we work through difficult emotions or experiences — but this is part of the process, and I’ll make sure the space remains safe, respectful, and supportive at all times.

Whether you come for a few sessions or over a longer period, the goal is the same: to give you insight, skills, and confidence that you can take into everyday life.
